Branford Land Trust Speaker Series Welcomes Malaine Trecoske from Branford Community Gardens and Erica O’Brien, Culinary Arts teacher at Branford High School
Ever wonder what to do with your banana peels and other food waste? Come find out about sustainable food practices right here in Branford, and across the globe in Sweden, in this fascinating, 2-part lecture presented by Malaine Trecoske from Branford Community Gardens and Erica O’Brien, Culinary Arts teacher at Branford High School on Thursday, April 18 from 6-7:30pm at the James Blackstone Memorial Library.
First, we’ll hear from Malaine Trecoske in “What to Do with Your Banana Peels in Branford.” She’ll talk about the food waste crisis in Connecticut and the implications it has for Branford, as well as suggesting how to modify our habits when dealing with food waste in our homes. Malaine has been a Branford resident for 28 years. As an avid lifelong gardener and composter she helps run Branford Community Gardens. From her background of teaching Chemistry and as a UConn Master Gardener and Master Composter, she loves sharing information on gardening and related topics. Her goal is to provide you with some good “food for thought.”
Then, we’ll find out about “Sustainable Food Practices in Sweden — and at Branford High School,” from Erica O’Brien. Erica traveled to Denmark and Sweden in the summer of 2023 on a grant to study sustainable food practices. She will discuss what she learned during her trip and how she implements the practices both in the culinary classroom at Branford High School and at home. Erica has been an educator for 24 years and currently teaches Culinary Arts. Erica is a passionate home gardener, recycler, and composter, and believes an important part of her job is teaching her students to make responsible food choices and to be stewards of the earth.
The Branford Land Trust Winter 2024 Speaker Series is made possible by a grant from the Branford Community Foundation and Guilford Savings Bank. Save the Date for the Branford Land Trust Annual Meeting, “An Introduction to the CT National Estuarine Research Reserve: A state and federal partnership for coastal research, education, training, and stewardship” with Kevin O’Brien manager of the National Estuarine Research Reserve on May 13.
What to Do with Your Banana Peels — Sustainable Food Practices with Malaine Trecoske and Erica O’Brien is free and open to the public. It will be held in-person at the Blackstone Library (758 Main St, Branford).
