Begin the New Year surrounded by nature, fresh air, and community! Join the Branford Land Trust for our annual First Day hike as we explore the DeLeo, Pieper, and Queach preserves on Thursday, January 1. The hike begins at 1:00 p.m.
Two routes will be offered: a longer hike of approximately 3.5 miles (about 2.5 hours), and a shorter hike, approximately 2 miles (about 90 minutes), both on moderate terrain with some ups and downs. Local naturalists from the BLT and the Town Commission on Parks and Open Space will offer their unique perspectives on this expansive nature preserve. We’ll gather afterwards at a local brewery (venue to be announced) for food, drinks, and conversation.
Meet at 156 Laurel Hill Road (0.9 miles off Brushy Plains Road) at the DeLeo parking area (look for the kiosk). There is limited parking so please carpool! Bad weather cancels. If the weather is good but the parking area too damp, we may direct people to park further up on Laurel Hill Rd. Visit www.branfordlandtrust.org or the BLT Facebook page at www.facebook.com/branfordlandtrustCT for confirmation.
This event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages not included. Wear appropriate dress and comfortable, supportive walking shoes. Bring water. Walking sticks encouraged. The event is good for kids as young as six or seven. Parents of younger children should use their discretion and be prepared to carry them for parts of the route. (Note: for those who want to walk less than 2 miles, join the shorter hike and just turn around at the ½ mile mark to retrace your steps back to the parking area). No dogs for this event, please.
