Your Support Will Protect Branford’s Natural Spaces

From the President: Annual Appeal

In November, 88% of Branford voters voted to protect open space with a YES vote on Ballot Question #2. This affirmation of our town’s value for open space was great to see.

For the past 50 years, the Branford Land Trust has worked hard to save and protect open space in our town. We also support measures like the November ballot measure to help with efforts at the state and regional level. As a member of the BLT we know you share our love of the outdoors and are asking you to make a donation to allow us to continue our mission of preserving open space and promoting appreciation of Branford’s natural features.

The BLT has a wonderful portfolio of open space throughout Branford. Whether it’s the trails of the Hoadley and Jarvis Creek Preserves surrounding the Stony Creek Quarry on the east, the interconnected trails to the Supply Ponds on the north, or the unexpected woodlands of the Short Beach Preserve on the western part of town, our properties offer an escape for everyone. They also offer habitat for birds and help produce clean water, among other things. Your annual appeal donation will continue to allow us to acquire new parcels and protect important wildlife and water resources.

The BLT works hard to protect our properties. Over the past few years we have reinvigorated our stewardship efforts. Each property is monitored carefully every year to make sure that habitat is protected. Every month work parties remove invasive species and clear garbage. We also have a very active trail committee monitoring and improving trails weekly. Finally for some properties, like “old fields,” we maintain disappearing habitat for flora and fauna.

The BLT exists because of generous donors like yourself. The day-to-day activities of the BLT are all coordinated and executed by volunteers. Thus your donations all go to support our land purchase, land protection, and educational programs. Programs like our August Environmental Day camp for kids, our Osprey Nest Program, and the Winter Lecture Series are all supported by our members and giving.
